As a minimalist composer, Tom Johnson found inspiration in the ideas of ancient and early modern mathematicians and philosophers, and collaborated with contemporary mathematicians, while incorporating theatrical and visual elements in his work. Nine Bells, written in 1979, opens the door to a compositional style based on these procedures. Johnson created the work as a maze of nine suspended bells that the performer hits while walking around a three-by-three square, following
paths that vary according to a system of geometrical logic (cloverleaf, figure-eight, circle, diagonal, oval, rectangle).
“When I think about Nine Bells I think about paths, trajectories, lines. It's not so much about arriving at the bell and hitting it at the right time, (an activity also known as percussion logistics), so much as it is about the traveling between. Literally the steps taken. Walking is famously one of the most difficult things to do on stage.

Jennifer Torrence is an experimental musician based in Oslo. Her practice includes percussion/performance, artistic research, collaborative projects, curation, composition and teaching. Her practice is built upon collaborative, performative, and multimedia work, and explores themes such as the body, noise, precariousness, queerness, and collective making. In addition to solo and collaborative projects, Jennifer is associate professor II of percussion at the Norwegian Academy of Music, a member of the Norwegian ensemble Pinquins and is the former principal percussionist of the Arctic Philharmonic.

Som minimalistisk komponist fant Tom Johnson inspirasjon i ideene til eldgamle og tidlig moderne matematikere og filosofer, og samarbeidet med samtids matematikere, mens han inkorporerte teatralske og visuelle elementer i arbeidet sitt. Nine Bells, skrevet i 1979, åpner døren til en komposisjons stil basert på disse prosedyrene. Johnson skapte verket som en labyrint av ni hengende bjeller som utøveren treffer mens hen går rundt en 3x3 firkant, og følger stier som varierer i henhold til et system av geometrisk logikk (kløverblad, åttefigur, sirkel, diagonal, oval, rektangel).
"Når jeg tenker på Nine Bells tenker jeg på stier, baner og linjer. Det handler ikke så mye om å komme til klokken og slå den til rett tid (en aktivitet også kjent som slagverk logistikk), så mye som det handler om reisen imellom. Bokstavelig talt trinnene som er tatt. Å gå er kjent som en av de vanskeligste tingene å gjøre på en scene.

Jennifer Torrence er en eksperimentell musiker med base i Oslo. Hennes praksis inkluderer perkusjon/performance, kunstnerisk forskning, samarbeidsprosjekter, kurering, komposisjon og undervisning. Hennes praksis er bygget på samarbeid, performance og multimedial arbeid, og hun utforsker temaer som kropp, støy, prekærhet, særhet og kollektivt skapende. I tillegg til solo- og samarbeidsprosjekter, er Jennifer førsteamanuensis II i perkusjon ved Norges musikkhøgskole, medlem av det norske ensemblet Pinquins og er tidligere solo slagverker i Arktisk Filharmoni.
